Artist: Corwin Bell
Human beings are but a glimpse in time. I try to capture that time frame, allowing the viewer to reestablish these momentary glimpses and recall one’s relationship with the sacred. Water is intensely challenging because it exists in so many forms. I try to create images and sensations that catch streams of thought– lost memories that glisten through our bodies. These archetypes are engraved into our subconscious through life experiences, media, and culture. I combine these subtle connections to inspire feelings that kindle an alternative collective sensitivity and evoke momentary realizations of an awakened self.
Corwin Bell refines how sound and image help move people to a different state of consciousness. He tries to establish a close sense of trust with his audience. Anything healing or transformative will only happen through trust. He creates this trust through technology and science. He lends awareness to what is sacred and thus opens alternate perspectives. Computer animation refines these principles for Bell. He believes that the viewer can have a daily awakening in his spaces, a view of serenity, bliss, and intense compassion. Music, sound, form, color – all these elements work towards the final space.
Guiding their feelings through the experience is what gives him the ability to let people be suspended in this journey of sensation. Bell uses animated sequences and music to create an alchemic effect on the mind and body. He is able to teleport the viewer into a sacred space. In a society where the media often manipulates the public in a negative manner, he uses it to heal the viewer. The journey inward reveals the truth. While exploring the power of sacred spaces and creating a site-specific space at MOA, Bell tries to bring the viewer towards a peak experience while reinforcing optimism for the future.
Corwin Bell has over fifteen years experience in film, animation, graphics, and multimedia productions. As chief design director at the Journey to Wild Divine, he envisioned combining a computer program with biofeedback so players can not only see the immediate impact of their thoughts and emotions, but also access their innate power of visualization. Bell had an enormous conceptual and technical task in order to develop the game. The game’s development required Bell to not only sharpen his computer skills, but also his deep knowledge of ancient healing techniques and biofeedback relaxation. The animation in the game is driven by the body’s physiology, and players actually experience states of being in such a way that they feel authentically empowered to positively influence their world. His artwork reflects upon the principles he refined at Wild Divine, as the animation invites the viewer to experience water from a sacred perspective.Bell received a BA in Computer Graphics and Experimental Film from Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA and a MA in Visual Communications from University of Northern Colorado.
