This artwork holds a special place in my collection, as it was created specifically for a unique event - 'Women In Hip Hop,' curated by the talented Exmiranda, a prominent musical artist in Toronto. The exhibit, held in April of 2021, provided a platform to celebrate the contributions of women in the hip hop community, and this piece was proudly showcased as part of the ensemble.
Crafted on sturdy bristol board paper, I meticulously sketched the portrait of Lil' Mama, infusing it with vibrant colors using a combination of micron and copic markers. To add depth and dimension, I carefully wielded an exacto-knife, delicately cutting out the intricate details of the portrait. Before proceeding to the next phase, I applied a protective sealant to safeguard the artwork for the journey ahead.
For the background, I opted for scrapbooking wallpaper, selecting a design that complemented the energy and spirit of Lil' Mama's persona. Applying the same meticulous care, I sealed the wallpaper to ensure its longevity and durability.
Then came the exhilarating yet nerve-wracking part - the resin. With careful precision, I poured and spread the resin over the artwork, knowing that any misstep could potentially mar the entire piece. The application had to be flawless; any imperfection could result in leaks that would irreparably damage the bristol board. Fortunately, my attention to detail paid off, and the resin adhered perfectly, encapsulating the artwork in a glossy finish that enhances its visual impact.
The end result is the stunning piece you see before you, a testament to the fusion of creativity and technical skill. It's more than just a portrait; it's a celebration of female empowerment in the hip hop community, immortalized in mixed media for all to admire and appreciate.
