My work explores the phenomenology of derealisation ~a dissociative state where the external world is perceived through a veil of unreality. Through the use of screen printing and assemblage, I interrogate the mediated nature of my own consciousness.
Screen printing serves as a primary metaphor for the sensory filter. By pushing the ink through a mesh, I replicate the experience of viewing reality through a barrier; the resulting images are intentionally fragmented and ‘ghosted’, reflecting a world that feels low fidelity and synthetically constructed. The repetitive print run mirrors the obsessive ‘checking’ of my environment ~a constant attempt to verify the validity of my surroundings. The juxtaposition of the mechanical screen print with the haptic hand wrapped infinity loop highlights the tension between the ‘optic’ (the distant flat world) and the ‘tactile’ (the desire for grounding). The glitch elements ~ the silver pixels and ink bleeds ~ act as evidence of a neurological malfunction, transforming the canvas into a site where the breakdown of the human environment interface is made visible. My practice seeks to destabilise the viewer’s perception, inviting them to inhabit the liminal space between the ‘real’ and the ‘simulated’.
