This piece involved mathematical shapes as well as painstakingly stitching yarn onto canvas….it took ages…my determination to complete this birthed the title ‘sunset/sunrise (make it count).
Whatever endeavour we embark on….make it count.
This piece explores the cyclical yet fleeting nature of time and the inherent value within each passing moment. Through the juxtaposition of structured geometric forms and the tactile qualities of diverse materials, I aim to evoke a sense of both the order and the ephemerality of existence.
The deliberate use of playground chalk introduces a transient element, reminiscent of fleeting childhood joys and the impermanence of the present. This contrasts with the more enduring qualities of acrylic and oil paints, which layer and blend to represent the depth and complexity of lived experience.
Handspun yarn and fabric weave in a sense of warmth and connection, symbolizing the threads of life and the comfort found in the tangible. These handcrafted elements ground the more abstract geometric shapes, suggesting the personal and human within the broader framework of time. The foundational layer of gesso represents potential and new beginnings, while the precise lines of ink highlight significant moments that leave their mark. Finally, the linen thread subtly binds the composition, echoing the interconnectedness of our experiences.
The title itself, "sunset/sunrise (make it count)," serves as a direct invitation to reflect on the significance of every transition, every ending, and every beginning. It is a reminder to be present, to appreciate the beauty in both the fading and the emerging light, and to consciously engage with the preciousness of each moment. The interplay of these materials and forms seeks to capture the dynamic tension between the continuous flow of time and the urgent call to live each moment with intention.
