Having been actively engaged with painting for the past eighty years, I have had an opportunity to try out a multitude of approaches, from “regional realism” to “curatorial conceptualism”.  My current work might best be described as “urgent visual triage”.  I crave the moments when a painting crashes together, not as a reference to life experience, but rather, as the actual experience in real time.  As work emerges, I am seduced by the dialogue that occurs between my conscious intentions and the co-equal, sometimes contrary intentions of my brush.  At the end of it, I am in charge, and yet, the brush frequently takes me where I have never been.  In those moments I am fascinated by the unpredictability of the process.  I only insist that the artifact 

truthfully record what the brush and I have explored. You can bet we’ve had fun!
