John Whytock - Oak Rose Studio
Springfield, Missouri
Oak Rose Studio began in 2018 as a way to showcase the art of John and Deborah Whytock.
MessageJohn Whytock has been a professional artist since 1979. His award-winning fine art has shown in galleries from New York City to San Francisco, and is collected throughout the world. He is also a renowned muralist, and has painted murals for hotels, casinos, and private parties.
John started his career as a self-taught pen and ink artist. His portfolio then gained him steady work in illustration. In the old-world tradition, John served a seven-year apprenticeship – two years as an in-house illustrator, and five years in a mural studio, becoming principal artist in both establishments. In 1986 he ventured out on his own upon winning a mural competition for Mission San Juan Capistrano. In the competitive world of art in Las Vegas in the 1990’s he was commissioned to complete over 150 custom paintings. He continued to paint and show fine art during this time. In 2011 he began numerous long-term commissions, including The Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium, and the NRA National Sporting Arms Museum.
Since the beginning of 2018 he has returned his focus to fine art, winning numerous awards from various organizations including: National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society, Oil Painters of America , International Guild of Realism, and Plein Air Salon Art Competition. Three of his works were chosen as finalists in the prestigious 14th International ARC Salon. His work has been published in Plein Air Magazine, and he was a contributing author for their online publication, Outdoor Painter. John is a member of numerous local and national professional organizations and is proud to be a founding member of Heartland Art Club.
Deborah Whytock has been an artist in one form or another most of her life. In 1998, she operated her own studio/ gallery where she collaborated with another artist. Breaking even the first year in business, though exceptional, was not adequate to survive financially. So she attended Loma Linda University to study physical therapy. After 15 years as a Physical Therapist Assistant she returned to art.
Her focus is currently photographs that display eclectic choices and find continuity in her style, which gravitates toward the drama of black and white. She is more concerned with the artistic aspects of the image vs. the technical precision applied through Photoshop. Her goal is to give you a view into what she sees – however imperfect that may be. She has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout the country over the past 4 years. In 2018 she was the recipient of two 1st place photography awards. Her affiliations include Springfield Regional Arts Council, Studio 55 Arts Guild, Best of Missouri Hands, and she is a founding member of Heartland Art Club.
Oak Rose Studio offers their artwork, classes and workshops in painting and drawing, and select website services for artists. John accepts commissions and has extensive experience in portraiture.
While John’s primary focus is painting and teaching, Deborah manages the business, including all websites, social media and marketing of their collective works, educational endeavors, and public speaking events.
Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in a commission, class/workshop, or a public speaking engagement.
