Rugged Solitude

An Original Landscape

Rugged Solitude

During the Chicago Quilt Festival I learned to make a snippet landscape from Cindy Walter. Rugged Solitude was created by fusing little snippets of fabric using a picture for inspiration. No pattern. The class was relaxing and productive, and I enjoyed it very much.

My unfinished project in my snippet landscape class.

I finished over half of my quilt during the class, and unlike some of my other classroom projects, I was anxious to finish it when I got home.

The secret ingredient in CIndy’s technique is Steam-A-Seam 2. This product allows you to easily move the pieces around as you design your landscape. But once you fuse the pieces with your iron, it is remarkedly permanent. I stocked up because I know I will use this technique in future quilts.

Cindy has several books on this technique. I bought several of them. This one may have been her first, but she also has a book on snippet flowers and a snippet Christmas motifs.

I chose to make Cindy’s technique my own by incorporating an African border. I embellished my quilt with painted wooden buttons and green crystals in the grass.

I named it Rugged Solitude because I could image myself sitting on the cliffs enjoying the solitude in deep thought. I used an angel print on the back to carry out the theme of reverence for nature. There is a hanging sleeve on the back of the quilt for easy display and a label that documents the quilt. I quilted it on my machine.
