Crafting in Dubai

Traveling for inspiration

Crafting in Dubai

I love combining my quilt life with my travel life. Discovering Craftours has made this a lot easier. Daughter India and I recently returned from a Craftour to Dubai. While the crafts I learned in Dubai technically had nothing to do with quilting, all art is inspiring to an artist, and every trip offers an opportunity to learn something new.

The written Arabic language is already beautiful, but in the hands of a master calligrapher, simple words turn into art. Our master calligrapher was kind enough to write each class member’s name in Arabic.

We also learned how to work with gypsum. We traced a pattern in the gypsum, then carved out the design with a knife. Later a color was applied. The technique reminded me of applique.

Finally we learned about the fine art of making perfume. Fragrance is very pervasive in Dubai. My special blend of perfume ended up being coffee, rose and lemon.

I always return home inspired after one of my crafting trips. I am sure something I learned in Dubai will show up in my quilts. #onlyovsoctober #joyfultraveler #gonnaseetheworld #motherdaughtertravels
