The Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society (Scleroseforeningen) was founded in 1957 by chief physician Dr. Torben Fog, one of the significant Danish contributors to multiple sclerosis (MS) research in the 20th century. The Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society’s purpose was to raise funds to benefit MS research and support patients and families affected by MS.
In 1977 the board of Scleroseforeningen initiated nationwide fundraising activities in celebration of the society’s 20th anniversary. Requiring a heavy amount of PR, Eva Mellerup approached the artist Bjørn Wiinblad in hopes that he could create a poster. Wiinblad did not have a concept in mind but agreed to take on the task free of charge. Wiinblad requested a meeting with Dr. Fog at his office in the Municipal Hospital to have a greater understanding of the symptoms and long-term effects of MS.
Bjørn Wiinblad left his meeting with Dr. Fog greatly affected by his new knowledge of MS. After just a few days, Eva Mellerup and Sybille Bruun -- vice president of the organization -- were called out to Wiinblad's studio in Lyngby to view the first drafts. Unfortunately, the pair had to disappoint him as the designs were too close to another organization’s identity. The artist expressed that he would work on a new design immediately! A few days later the group was called out again, and Wiinblad had hit the mark. He had produced three slightly varying designs, but the obvious choice depicted a patient in a wheelchair beside a caregiver ready to help in any way.
The posters were printed and upon completion Dr. Fog, Bjørn Wiinblad and Eva Mellerup visited Queen Margrethe -- the patroness of Scleroseforeningen. Queen Margrethe was given the original color drawing for the poster. One of the original sketches was sold to a Danish MS researcher. Sybille Bruun visited Dr. Fog's office one day and noticed that another original sketch was hanging on his wall. She expressed her astonishment that it had not been sold, since the proceeds could go to fund MS research. Dr. Fog and Eva Mellerup made the decision to sell the piece, but some time later Eva complained about the loss to Bjørn Wiinblad. Wiinblad had also wanted one for his studio, so he decided to create two new drawings based on the original poster. One went to his studio, and one was created for Dr. Fog and Eva Mellerup’s office.
This piece is the one created for the Dr. Fog and Eva Mellerup’s office, and the dedication inscribed on the front of the drawing reads:
"Dear Torben Fog, Dear Eva Mellerup. Here is the drawing that I promised you -- from the grey original. It is of course not exactly the same as the original, but I have tried to recreate the idea. A heartfelt thank you, Bjørn Wiinblad"
