"Snapshot" sculpture project began with public workshops at a Leonel Castillo BakerRipley Community Center in Summer 2019. The community center was family friendly and easily accessed by Northside residents. The facilities were free and provided breakfast. Workshops were well attended by Northside participants. Participants created 110 Mosaic florets using more than 10,000 small tiles. The florets are lined around the sculpture’s base and surrounded by blue tiles representing the bayou on permanent display.
Our project intent was for visitors to snap selfie photos of themselves and the Houston skyline in the sculpture sky frame. We observed bike trail users snapping photos of Houston’s skyline with the sculpture the day the sculpture was mounted. This project aligned with Art Uniti’s artistic practice to create sustainable public art bringing a community together.
Our partner organizations were instrumental planning and providing a venue, seating and pa system for the public ribbon cutting ceremony. We invited all sponsoring agencies to hold the ribbon as a community while Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia cut the ribbon. Distinguished speakers from our partner organizations spoke about art and sculpture. We paid a mariachi band and a professional photographer to take pictures and photo both snapshots.
Most rewarding is all the subsequent posts by people just encountering "Snapshot" now while visiting the bike trails or the community center. We have received many hashtags. This was the project intent to provide public art community based at a high visibility site.
