Commentary:
Palm Springs is set in the Colorado desert and depicts the passion of Christ attended by his mother, the Virgin Mary, represented in modern fashion - in this case a Christian Dior gown. A figure in the foreground - a contemporary fashion model is caught in a moment of contemplation as she gazes out of the painting at the viewer. A tension seems to exist between the fashion model and the historic representation of the Passion. The contemporary secular world is caught in a desert mirage - an hallucination, in which faith, religious belief and the secular world cohabit for a brief moment. Palm Springs alludes to Palm Sunday before Christ's Passion and the Biblical notion of the desert as a place of trial and tribulation, but also one of personal reflection, inner renewal and spiritual transformation.
