MessageDr Nicholas Wyatt is an artist and researcher and a founder member of Cubitt, an artist-run gallery and studios in London where he works, which has gained an international reputation and receives public funding. Nicholas Wyatt graduated from Central St Martins School of Art London with a BA Hons. Degree in Fine Art ( Painting) in 1984. His tutors were David Haughton, Cecil Collins and William Turnbull. Nicholas gained his PhD in Fine Art in 2015 at Loughborough University, with the completion of his doctoral thesis, The Christian Image and Contemporary British Painting: (the communication of meaning and experience in religious paintings)(PhD supervisor Dr Malcom Barnard and Dr Anja Baumhoff). Nicholas Wyatt’s paintings, both abstract and figurative, explore how narratives of presence are communicated in painting with particular reference to the reception aesthetics of certain key examples of Baroque religious iconography. Nicholas has exhibited widely in London, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, including Arnolfini, Bristol; Museum Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf; Acedemia Italiana, London, Gallerie de Rijk, Netherlands, Basilica Santa Anastasia Al Palatino, Rome. He has shown work with the following artists: Peter Doig, Petra van Harte, Tacita Dean, Mariele Neudeckar, Kees Baarten, Henriette van t'Hoog, Uwe Esser, and Jan Kolata. His work can be found in private and public collections including The Vatican and Stadt Sparkasse Bank, Dusseldorf. He has curated a number of international exhibitions: Crosscurrents in the Netherlands, 1993; Sconfinamenti, Italy 1995-97; and After the Endgame - New Abstraction, the Netherlands, 2008. In 1997 he co-founded The Friedrich Society (an artist debating society on the legacy of German Romanticism in contemporary practice) with the artist and writer Simon Morley. In 2000, Nicholas co-curated the resulting Wreck of Hope exhibition at The Nunnery Gallery, Bow Arts Trust, London. He has also delivered conference papers in his area of research at The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and Loughborough University.
