This is a depiction of Clementine Hunter, who was a self-taught Black folk artist from the Cane River region of Louisiana. She lived and worked on the Melrose Plantation. She began painting with donated paints and on anything handy even window roller shades. She was likened to Grandma Moses in that she didn't begin painting until later in life and then had a prolific career. She is sculpted in paper clay over a wire armature.
She wears a vintage cotton slip under her sheer voile dress. Sandals are made from raffia. I painted the small replica of one of her paintings. Her paint jar is filled with a hardening medium that looks like water.
