NIADA Gallery
NIADA is an international organization of artists and patrons dedicated to the art of the contemporary doll
MessageSince 1977 Stephanie Blythe has been creating dolls that awaken the joy, spirit and imagination of childhood.
Recognized as one of the finest artists in her field, Stephanie has created a body of work that has been exhibited internationally and can be found in celebrated private and public collections including the Musee Des Arts Decoratifs at the Louvre in Paris, The White House Christmas Tree and The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, Kansas City, MO and Casa de las Mil Munecas, Mexico City.
Each piece begins as porcelain slip is poured into Stephanie's original molds. While still in the clay form, each piece is individually sculpted and carefully cleaned, then fired in a kiln. The graceful heads, arms and legs that emerge are individually china painted; a process that requires several more firings in the kiln. Costumes are built of special details; real acorns and lichens or bits of antique lace, ribbon and fabrics from other time periods and other lives. Tiny Swarovski Austrian crystals, opals, antique metal or sterling findings and occasionally real wings complete the vision.
Because of the craftsmanship, antique materials and creativity involved, each is unique possessing a magical quality that makes fantasy believable.
