NIADA is an international organization of artists and patrons dedicated to the art of the contemporary doll
MessageThank you for viewing my NIADA 2021 Artist Exhibit Album. I live in Weston, Connecticut and I’ve been a NIADA Artist Member since 1999.
I started making dolls about thirty-five years ago after leaving the fashion industry and pursuing a career in nursing. I always loved sewing and creating clothing, but after seeing an advertisement in the back of a magazine for a cloth doll kit my creativity took a new direction. After being frustrated at the limitations of facial expression possible on a cloth face I began putting gesso on the cloth head so it could be painted using oils. I had found my niche! Because of a quirky preference for dolls with big feet I started exaggerating my body patterns to reflect this. I also feel the position of the head is an important aspect of emotion, so I created a way to make a cloth head rotate in the socket on a flange.
I cannot imagine my life without doll making. No other art form combines so many creative endeavors that I truly love. I have a true passion for painting, fashion design, pattern drafting, hairstyling and color harmonizing. My hope is for others to be touched not only by these visual elements that I love but by the humor my characters evoke as well.
