Matilda was born on her mother’s country Wirrajah near Cowra and then raised in her grandfather’s house at Hollywood in Yass. In 1963 Matilda returned to her ancestral home of Canberra becoming a prominent Indigenous activist and an integral figure in the development of services and recognition for Aboriginal people. This portrait aims to evoke a sense of storytelling - to share Matilda’s story of resilience, tireless contribution to community and culture, and strong connection to country that continues to inspire and educate many.
