I painted this piece en plein air when the weather was calm on Lake Superior. I was standing along the shore on the distinctive purple slabs of rock. The water of Lake Superior is incredibly clear and you can see all kinds of colors --whether created by the sun hitting the rocks along the shore or the different depths of water as you look out into the lake. The vastness of the lake feels like the ocean...there's just no salt.
