With an MFA in Art and Design and an MA in Art Education from the University of Illinois, Nancy’s practice is rooted in a deep understanding of structural aesthetics. Having exhibited her sculptural works on prominent national stages—including the Smithsonian Institution and the Cherry Creek Art Show in Denver—she now focuses her energy on intuitive painting. Currently, Nancy channels her extensive background into an intuitive painting practice. Her transition to oil and acrylics has been marked by several solo shows, including a recent feature at Auric Gallery in Colorado Springs, where she continues to refine her expressive, process-driven style. Her current work in oil and acrylic reflects a career-long dedication to craftsmanship, reimagined through contemporary abstraction. Nancy’s paintings are currently in Old Colorado City at Lucky Pig Gallery and in Colorado Springs at The Lookup Gallery
Statement
My abstract paintings are an energetic response to the raw, resplendent vitality of the Colorado landscape. Drawing from a lifelong intimacy with the mountains, my work is deeply informed by my years as a rock climber. While I no longer scale the granite faces of Lumpy Ridge or the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park, the muscle memory of those experiences—the tactile sensation of ledges, the depth of crevasses, and the sheer verticality of the West—remains embedded in my creative process.
My practice is divided into two simultaneous explorations:
- Torn Earth Series: These oil paintings are purely intuitive and process-driven. I eschew photographic references in favor of spontaneous play, allowing the medium to mimic the very geological forces—folding, erosion, and sedimentation—that shape our world. Through careful color and value studies, I translate the "deep time" of the earth into visceral, layered compositions.
- Canyon Studies: Working in acrylic and mixed media, this series focuses on the energetic imprints left by the mountains near my home. These works are not literal depictions, but rather attempts to capture the atmospheric movement and vitality of mountain weather.
Through these series, I aim to paint not just what I see, but the enduring spirit of the wilderness as I have lived it.
