Collection: The Elephant Matriarchy

A collection of photography & encaustic paintings. The collection of photographs was taken in Tanzania, Africa and focuses on the interactions between various herds of elephants. Elephant herds consist of mainly females, a matriarchal head of mothers, sisters, daughters and their calves. Females live in these tightly -bonded family structures and stay together for life, whereas males typically live a solitary life. A herd can consist of anywhere from three to twenty five elephants. This collection of images raises the question. “What could we learn from the daily interactions of elephant communities?”
