I have lived most of my life in Northeastern Ohio, near Lake Erie and the beautiful Cleveland Metroparks which inspire me daily. I have some formal art training from Kent State University, but am largely self-taught. I have flirted with painting, drawing, mosaics, collage and assemblage and am focusing on painting at present. I work primarily in acrylics on canvas and my process is constantly evolving because I am always learning more about the medium, and more importantly, myself.
Statement
“As my artist statement explains, my work is incomprehensible and therefore filled with deep significance” – Calvin & Hobbes
I wish I had written that, but since I didn’t…
Any vision or talent that I have is a gift from God. I draw my inspiration from the beautiful, poignant ruin of the world that we live in. Everywhere I catch glimpses of His handiwork and it stuns me with its loveliness. God is the ultimate artist, the ultimate creator, and I am humbled to be able to reshape elements of His world into images that are new. An alternate reading of “to glorify Him” is “to display His beauty”. It is my desire to display His beauty, however imperfectly, through my life and my art.
I work in a variety of media, primarily acrylics, but also collage, pastels, oil pastels, and colored pencil. I enjoy combining media and exploring their limits. I’m strongly influenced by the natural environment; colors, textures and seasonal changes.
I'm captivated by color. I love nature, symbols, glyphs and ancient languages. The space around the objects in my work is as important and meaningful as the objects themselves.I want the viewer to see my imperfect hand in my work. I hope that my art makes you happy, curious, perhaps makes you laugh, and is both mysterious and available at the same time. If it makes you question your assumptions or dream of a better time and place then I’ve done my job.
In addition to original works, giclee's of most works are available in a variety of sizes. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing a print.
