Chale Island and Gede Ruins are part of a series of paintings that emerged from the intersection of personal memories and artistic expression. Whilst the works are created in Norway, they are inspired by a road trip along the Kenyan coastline.
Each painting in the series represents, and is titled after, specific locations from the journey of which hold both cultural and personal significance. The series is represented by sacred sites with untold stories beneath the surface, reflected in my interpersonal connections at the time.
As an exploration of place and memory, I aimed to convey the atmosphere of each location by working with a three coloured palette, chosen by the colours represented at each location. The visual language in these pieces is intentionally focused on private emotions in public landscapes while wanting to capture the natural beauty of incredible Kenyan destinations.
Through these paintings, I invite the viewer to experience these spaces not just as geographical sites but as living memories that transcend time; with layers of experiences within the same location.
