This piece is made from reclaimed Douglas Fir wood that used to be wall studs in a house. This old wood is characterized by nail holes, naturally meandering grain lines and other beautiful imperfections (a knot and a cut) from the past of being a building material. I enjoy making the wood flow and bringing out the natural warm colors of the wood. Three sides of each wood piece are smoothly sanded and finished with linseed oil. One remaining side is left rough and finished with black chalkboard paint (see third photo). This provides multiple perspectives on how to explore this sculpture.
