Missy Borden
Broomfield , CO
I am fascinated by the interplay between structure and spontaneity. Each piece embraces the unknown and is a meditation on the beauty of unpredictability.
MessageMissy has a place where, free from the distractions, roles and responsibilities, she is able to tap into the creativity that has stirred her soul since childhood – her studio. Recently, she moved from the Rocky Mountains to the city, where she now lives in Broomfield, Colorado. Her studio is outside the home and is where her abstract paintings created in mixed media are born.
Art making had always been an integral part of her life and when it was a required elective in high school, it was her lifeline. It wasn’t until later in life that she understood just why art was so important to her. Being the youngest of four children, Missy never knew just how small and quiet she made herself in order to fit within the family dynamic. Never wanting to ‘rock the boat’ or draw too much attention to herself, she learned to keep it all inside and because of this her internal world flourished. Art became her way to express some of that which she buried deep within.
She began college and then an unplanned pregnancy, at the age of 19, found her to be the only pregnant student at the community college she attended. After her baby was born, she then became the only student who occasionally brought an infant to her art classes. In the spring of 2015, she graduated with an Associates of Art Degree with a Fine Art emphasis; her husband and three young children were in the audience.
In October of 2015, she decided to intentionally carve time away from her role as a wife and a stay at home mother of three, and create her artwork. Missy joined The Center for Visual Arts Gallery, a co-op art gallery in Steamboat Springs, in 2016. For two years she learned what it takes to be a working artist. She decided that perhaps the time was not right for her to be a working artist which took so much time away from her family.
Five years later, in December of 2020, she was invited to interview for a guest membership at the Pine Moon Fine Art Gallery, an esteemed locally owned gallery in Steamboat Springs, CO. After fulfilling her 3 month guest membership she was invited to become a full artist owner/member and was represented at the gallery through September of 2023.
Now, since her move from the mountains to the city, Missy is looking forward to growing her art business to include more: gallery representation, events for collectors and time in the studio.
