It was the third hour when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: The King of the Jews. They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

This picture is part of a series of works titled "The Stations of the Cross". The background of the biblical scene of Christ crucifixion is depicted atop Red Mountain overlooking downtown Birmingham, Alabama.

"The Crucifixion" was one of my first works in preparation for the "Stations of the Cross". This pastel for me is an example of how miracles happen beyond the artist's ability to think and see. The background colors seem to echo the different shades of red found in the iron ore of the soil on Red Mountain.
