"The Betrayal and the Healing of the Ear" is taken from the biblical story of Judas' betrayal and the soldier's ear being cut off and healed as Jesus was arrested (Matthew 26:51; Mark 14:47; Luke 22:51; and John 18:10–11).

"In this work I borrowed from another artist, Giotto, for his image of the kiss but the healing of the ear was important to me too in that Jesus at this most unimaginable time was thinking of the man who lost his ear and rebuking his own disciples. Putting the two images together with a huge tree encircling the scene was an interesting thought."
