In Miriam's painting titled “View of Homewood with Vulcan” or “Three Lights and a Birthday Cake”, you can see from Homewood village Vulcan’s backside at the top of the mountain, then holding a lighted torch which would be red if there was a traffic fatality in the city. The figures going down the main street are holding the Olympic torch which was carried through the city for the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. And the third light is represented by the red-striped awning of Savage’s Bakery, the go-to place for sweets and birthday cakes for generations of Birminghamians.
