This 1975 self-portrait shows McClung at 40 years old, seated in her home studio in Birmingham, Alabama, dressed in a soft pink sleeveless top with her easel just visible at the right edge of the canvas. By this time she was a mother of one child and a full-time caregiver, and the tired, serious look in her eyes speaks to the weight of those responsibilities pulling against her life as an artist. Behind her, a wooden cabinet, leafy houseplants, and a few studio objects fill the space with the warm clutter of a working home. The honesty of the painting is what gives it its power, with McClung holding nothing back about how she felt in that season of life. It is a brave, grounded self-portrait of a woman determined to keep making art in the middle of everything else she was carrying.
