Taken from John 20:7 when Jesus after the resurrection says to Mary Magdelene, “Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
Rabboni intimately expresses the encounter of Mary Magdalene, the former prostitute
who lavishly pours expensive oil on Jesus’ feet in an act of adoration, and Jesus after his resurrection.
In John 20:15-16, Jesus says to Mary at the tomb, “‘Woman, why are you crying? Who is it
you are looking for?’ Thinking he was the gardener, she said, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away,
tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned toward
him and cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (which means Teacher).”
ARTIST'S NOTES
This image from the Bible has been painted by many artists throughout the centuries all with different interpretations. I wanted to do a close up of the scene to make it feel tenderer.
