Miriam McClung
Crossville, TN
Birmingham, Alabama artist painting on life and faith for over seventy years.
Message"Christ at Gethsemane" draws on Matthew 26, the night Jesus prays in the garden before his arrest. McClung works in loose, smudged pastel, with a white-robed figure stretched low across the center of the scene—Christ lying down in prayer—surrounded by dark, heavy strokes of yellow, gray, and black. In the upper left she sets three rough crosses in dark black pastel, a quiet reminder of the crucifixion still to come, while the shadowy forms elsewhere suggest the garden at night and the disciples who slept nearby. Rather than spell out the story, she lets the rough marks and dark palette carry the weight and isolation of the moment of Jesus prayers.
