This 1963 profile portrait shows a young blonde boy wearing a dark blue captain's cap with a yellow insignia and an olive-toned coat, set against a muted green-brown background. McClung painted the work during her studies at the Jerry Farnsworth School of Portrait Painting in Sarasota, Florida, where the boy posed as a studio model. Farnsworth was a well-known portrait painter, and his training shows in the careful handling of light on the boy's face and ear, the soft transitions of skin tone, and the restrained color palette. The brushwork is loose in the background and clothing but tighter around the face, giving the portrait a quiet, focused presence. The style differs from the artist's later, more expressionist work. The painting is among the artist's own favorite pieces.
