Miriam McClung
Crossville, TN
Birmingham, Alabama artist painting on life and faith for over seventy years.
Message"Aslan at Redmont" shows the lion from C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia walking down a curving, tree-lined stretch of Redmont Road in Birmingham, Alabama. McClung paints him moving quietly among ordinary people and a dog along the road, set against a wooded garden of stone walls, urns, and flowering trees rendered in warm autumn light. She chose the same road she used for her Stations of the Cross series on the crucifixion of Christ, and the link is intentional: in Lewis's books, Aslan stands as a figure for Christ. For viewers who know the Narnia stories, the golden lion making his way down this familiar street carries an echo of the sacrifice McClung explored in those earlier works.
