This painting, “Old China Cabinet” was painted from life in the dining room of Domaine St.Jacques, a magnificent 900-year old Provence mansion on a hill between the villages of Methamis and Blauvac set in the glorious countryside around the foot of the Géant Provençale, the Mont Ventoux. The house is spacious and full of period details, from the original beams and floors to historical curiosities. Its vast grounds make this a very private and peaceful spot in an idyllic part of Provence whilst being close to several beautiful villages including Venasque and the major Provencal town of Carpentras. The main part of the house dates back to the 15th century, with the oldest parts going back to the 1100s. The exposed beams and flagstone floors are original, from the 1400s. The house is full of historical charm and interest with furnishings and decorations that reflect and suit the architectural elements.
It was painted during a hosted painting workshop holiday in 2018 with celebrated British artist Julian Merrow-Smith who resides in Provence, and who is known for his Postcard from Provence website.
