I am becoming fascinated by what we know and don’t know about the layers of the earth. Layers of the earth, like the layers of the body. The crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core.
Every layer has a unique composition, physicality, and affects life on the Earth's surface. If the mantle moves from changes in heat at the core, plates are shifted and earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can happen, subtly or drastically changing the landscape and lives.
Geologically, the Ortiz Mountains, where I live with my family now and where Native Americans lived for over 10,000 years, were said to be the result of volcanism that occurred 29 million years ago. Wo.
What are the many histories of this soft ground beneath and around me? I just started reading a small but layered book, “The Gold of the Ortiz Mountains: A Story of New Mexico and the West’s First Major Gold Rush” by William Baxter.
Lots of digging, dreaming, moving, hurting, dying, surviving. Mountain lions, bats, rats, bears, and ravens watching, listening.
