This painting is an interpretation of a photo of what is believed to be the skull of Plinius the elder. I chose this image because his story is exemplary of someone who bravely gave up his life to rescue other people in danger. He was a commander of a fleet and rushed t to the shore of Stabia to try to rescue the civilians fleeing the Vesuvius eruption in Pompeii. He perished during the mission. The right side of the image is his jar, but could also be interpreted as a sign of Victory.
