Mimi Hwang is an Asian American artist known for her abstract expressionist work.
MessageMs. Hwang was born in Highland Park, Illinois, grew up in Waukegan, and earned a degree in Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ms. Hwang’s parents emigrated to the United States from Hunan, China after World War II. Her earliest art inspiration came from her parents who loved the arts, especially her father, a brilliant Chinese scientist who enjoyed the fine arts, painting small landscapes and portraits using Chinese watercolors.. After graduating from the University of WIsconsin-Madison with a degree in Psychology, Ms. Hwang moved to NYC, the center of the avant-garde arts and punk rock music scene in the late 1970s and 80s. Her professional career was in publishing and spanned decades working for such great institutions as HBO, Time Warner and Harcourt Inc. By the mid-nineties, Mimi had moved to Florida to raise her two sons. In 2018 Mimi was finally able to turn her full attention to her art, and as a self-taught artist in Orlando, Fl., began exploring her identity as an Asian American artist.
Statement
I am an Asian American Artist. As an ode to my heritage, I seek to create a contemporary visual expression of my Chinese ancestry and Western birth, by the use of bold calligraphy strokes and color ("balancing Chinese and foreign, blending ancient and modern"), to portray the breadth and fusion of my influences. In the past few years when tragedy nearly broke me, issues of bi-cultural identity surfaced, and feelings of existential exile caused pain - my art became ever more my path to sharing and finding joy. I hope my art elicits your expansive emotions and displays a sense of strength, elegance, and playful intelligence within the compositions.
Currently, I am honored to be part of McRae Art Studios, Central Florida’s largest artist collectives. My works have shown at the Winter Park Art Spring Festival 2023, Red Dot Gallery at Art Basel Miami 2022, SpotLight Artist at City Arts Factory, Gallery 32789 Winter Park, Gallery 500 Daytona Beach, Mills Gallery Orlando, First Thursday Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando Airport (MCO), Museum of Arts and Sciences Daytona Beach, Orlando FusionFest 2020, The Jonesy Collective 2020 Online Auction, Arts League of Daytona Beach, and the Orlando Hyatt. – Mimi Hwang
