Tiamat
Inspired by the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of the sea and a symbol of primordial chaos and creation, Tiamat emerges as part of the series Gravid: Mothers of Monsters. This body of work delves into the visceral sensation of gestation—the fullness of creative potential, the turbulence of ideas taking form, and the rising tides of unbridled power.
Throughout history, those who gestate and birth powerful beings—whether mythological figures or creators in their own right—have often been maligned as monstrous women or as creators of terrifying entities. Such framing stems from a fear of the different and the disruptive potential of creativity. With Tiamat, I honor these symbols of misunderstood and feared creation, reclaiming them as potent archetypes of transformative power.
Constructed from salvaged materials, including a repurposed shop display table and factory-rejected fiber and fur, the piece transforms discarded objects into a dynamic embodiment of rebirth and regeneration. The intricate, hand-woven fibers echo organic forms, conjuring the raw, undulating energy of creation itself. This work serves as an homage to those who dare to create—those who carry within them the churning chaos of innovation and transformation, and who shape new worlds despite the fears and judgments of others
