Isaac Scott is a ceramic artist, curator, and photographer from Madison, WI who is currently living in Philadelphia, PA. Isaac is an MFA candidate at Tyler School of Art and Architecture and plans to graduate in Fall of 2021. His ceramic work has been exhibited around the country including The Clay Studio in Philadelphia and at the 20219 National Conference for Education in the Ceramic Arts in Minneapolis. Isaac’s photographs of the 2020 Uprising in Philadelphia were featured in the June 22ndth, 2020 issue of the New Yorker. In August of 2020 Isaac completed his first mural alongside collaborators Gerald A. Brown and Roberto Lugo. The Stay Golden mural is located at 33rd and W Diamond St. in Philadelphia, PA.
Whether through ceramic pottery, sculpture, photography, or mural art, Isaac treats each piece as a monument that reflects the the voices, emotions, and experiences of his environment. Beginning in the ceramic field, Isaac is mindful of the longevity and durability of the medium. Countless people’s in history have told their stories through clay and their work is still around centuries later to inspire us today. Myth’s and legends, larger than life figures, gods, kings and queens adorn ancient pottery and give us insight into our past and ourselves. Isaac brings the monumental into everyday life through cups, plates, bowls, pitchers, and jars. He portrays cultural icons and the people around him, not as mere mortals but how they exist in his own psyche. Hero's who are larger than life. Just as Monuments are erected to capture the essence or spirit of an individual and a people, Isaac brings his contemporary heroic figures to his hand thrown pottery to elevate them to a mythic status. Similarly Isaac is able to recreate himself on his work. In the world Isaac creates on his pots he is able to take on different personas and identities.
Just as Isaac elevates his subjects on the surface of his pottery, his photography pays tribute to the people, places in his environment. His work capturing the 2020 Uprising follows the protesters and organizers in Philadelphia and the movement for Black Lives. Isaac captures the humanity of those involved and the brutality they faced in the streets. Through his work Isaac’s goal is to capture the voices and stories of the Black Lives Matter movement and amplify them past this moment so that they can speak to generations to come.
