"The Fire Escapes" captures the shifting light, energy, and geometry of the Flatiron/Madison Square District in New York City. The painting transforms a narrow overhead view of an alley into luminous planes of color and form. Like light passing through a prism, breaking into facets that reveal New York City’s architectural rhythm.

While painting in New York, I also needed to work inside my studio. Although I was having a successful outdoor experience, the School of Visual Arts reminded me that I was assigned a studio in the heart of the Arts District in Manhattan. As a plein air painter, this isn’t an easy task; I had to find inspiration through observation. I didn’t want my work to be boring. I then became very inspired by the view from the studio windows. The complex layering of fire escapes—famous in NYC—the perspectives, and the illusion of depth created by the multilayering of buildings captivated me. The air was very smoky due to the Canadian forest fires blowing down to NY. Blanketing lower Manhattan.
