** Accepted into Women's Work Juried Exhibit at CALC **
This fiber painting honors Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first professionally trained African American nurse in the United States. As a hard-working woman with a dream to break down racial barriers and to become a nurse, she started her journey working at the New England Hospital for Women and Children as a janitor, cook, washer woman and nurse’s aide. After 15 years, Mary enrolled in nursing school along with 41 other students. She was one of four who finished, making her the first African American to graduate from nursing school. Mary spent the remainder of her life serving others as a nurse and promoting equality within the field of nursing.
