Michelle Moats
Shippensburg, PA
Fiber artist specializing in creating expressive portraits, using bold colors and textured fibers to capture and convey the emotions of her subjects.
MessageUsing vibrant dyed felting wool, artist Michelle Moats creates fiber paintings that are often mistaken for traditional paintings when viewed from a distance. Primarily inspired to paint portraits of people and animals, she loves to blend the discipline of wool felting with the aesthetics of conventional paint. Using the techniques of needle felting and wet felting, Michelle is driven to push boundaries by experimenting with new materials and new methods for enhancing her art. Her award-winning fiber paintings have been featured in several exhibits and galleries in the Northeast. A native of Central Pennsylvania, Michelle sells her artwork directly and through local galleries where she occasionally gives demonstrations or teaches classes.
Statement
"My fiber portraits, with their bold colors and emotional faces, make a quick initial impression. My goal is to inspire a deeper look—a look to study the unexpected use of wool fiber as a medium for painting and even more so, to ponder the story of the subject in that fiber painting."
