Birches can be found all over Manitoba, so they’re not rare or particularity special….but I think so. What I love the most, are the scars and marks left behind when the bark peels away. The papery white bark was such a treasure to find on the ground as a child, thinking of how I could make ancient scrolls or Birch Bark canoes. I was always told never to peel the bark as that would be cause damage, so when I found some lying around, that really made me happy. This winter scene is icy and cold, and you can feel the crisp air entering into your lungs as you explore, off the beaten path “Through The Birches” where you are sheltered from the wind.
