MessageAbout the Artist
Michelle Blackmon
Representational Fine Art
Michelle's Plein Air paintings and Still Lifes include amazing effects of light and shadows that she sees in everyday life. Through her work, viewers enjoy the opportunity to see natural landscapes within the urban surroundings. Born and raised a city girl, Michelle has always been drawn to water. She spent many of her childhood summers at Grand Beach with family. Michelle Blackmon reveals the true beauty of nature all around us in the city and in common objects as seen and felt in the heart of the artist.
Her passion for painting and need to create has been evident through her whole life in some shape or form. She studied Fine Arts at The University of Manitoba in the 80s and was fortunate enough to be among the best art professors with the likes of Ivan Eyre, Don Reichert and William Pura who have had a great influence on her to this day to chase her dreamsof being an Artist.
It was many years since her studies that she decided to pick up her brushes once again. Covid may have had something to do with it. It was time to dig deeper and painting was the catalyst to express herself in a way that came most natural to her.
Michelle Blackmon's paintings speak for themselves which capture a sense of elegance, excitement and curiosity. She gives the viewer a sense of place and guides them into her world to enjoy with the magic of light, shadows, color, and freedom to explore the "What if?."
Statement
In a nutshell, my work is reflection of what I notice, love, and feel drawn to paint on any given day. I am not stuck in one box, or subject matter, for then I fear boredom of not being able to express myself the way I want to. I am still, and always will be finding my path, my voice to speak to others through my art.
When I set up a still life, I love that I get to control the light and shadows and the composition. I will play around with the set up until it feels “just right”. I’m not so worried about the things that I choose to paint, but this will be the bonus of what I’m enjoying in my life presently. I love painting floral still lifes as I feel the flowers deserve to be ever captured in time. I also like quirky, and kitchy to explore everyday objects to be displayed as Art.
When I sit outside in nature to tackle a Plein Air session, I marvel at the vastness around me, and the challenge is to narrow it down to a manageable composition. The colours, the air, the feelings of being outside, and the blank canvas in front of me excite me the most . This is how I capture my experience, whether walking through the woods breathing in the clean air, sitting on a beach at sunrise, or in front of an iconic building, I am living in that moment.
The thickness of the oil paint , the longer open time, the pushing and pulling and sculpting with the paint, the visible brush work in the somewhat abstract way I apply the paints onto the canvas or panels is how my work most excites me. It’s still amazing to me each time, how shapes and forms take place to actually represent what I’m seeing… Through the eyes of an artist!
Painting is my purpose and I truly hope to portray my passion in every piece I share with you.
