Who is Michelle the Artist?
Michelle works in a variety of mediums, known as mixed media using alcohol links, acrylics, paint, pens, collage, gold leaf, and oils. This gives her artwork a unique and dynamic perspective in the layering of the multiple mediums. Vibrant colours and expressive brush strokes, bring her canvas to life, often surprising herself and collectors with unexpected images and details. She describes her style as “Abstracted, Impressionistic and Representational”, all at the same time.
Michelle Blackmon attended Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba where she studied under prolific artist like Ivan Eyee, Don Reichert, and Bill Pura. She has shown and sold her work, (special commissions included), to collectors across Canada and the US, online, and in a variety of local gallery shows and art fairs. Winnipeg galleries include WarehouseArtworks Cre8ery, Sleeping Dog, Kathleen Crosby Gallery Fleet Gallery, Framing & Art Center, Red River Exhibition, Canada Life, Piano Nobile Gallery, Centennial Concert Hall, Gimli Art Show, Artarama and the Winnipeg Fine Art Fair. Michelle is a current member of Manitoba Society Of Artisrs annd the St Vital Art Group Inc.
Michelle shares her creative drive teaching others “one on one”, and in groups. She has held Cancer Care Fundraisers, and team-building paint sessions for larger groups who want to have fun expressing themselves through the language of art.
Michelle was born and raised in Winnipeg. She fondly remembers her childhood summers at Grand Beach where she played, ran around barefoot and explored in freedom. She is still drawn to the blue water, hot vibrant sun, and soft warm sand. She feels this may have some underlying influence in her work today and her love for the color blue.
After retiring from a 35+ year career in the Banking Industry, she has moved to “small town” St. Adolphe to be closer to family and nature. She enjoys the sense of community and the slower paced lifestyle where she draws inspiration from walks along the Red River and the local Friendship Trail. She loves to paint daily in her home studio where she is happy to invite people in to view her art.
Michelle’s mission is “To create artwork that stirs the heart, creates passion, and provokes memories of special moments shared with loved ones”.
When asked “Why” , she answers, “I make art for people looking for color and excitement in their daily lives, to brighten their day and to make them smile”.
Statement
Artist’s Statement
In a nutshell, my work is reflection of what I notice, love, and feel drawn to paint on any given day. I am not stuck in one box, or subject matter, for then I fear boredom of not being able to express myself the way I want to. I am still, and always will be finding my path, my voice to speak to others through my art.
When I set up a still life, I love that I get to control the light and shadows and the composition. I will play around with the set up until it feels “just right”. I’m not so worried about the things that I choose to paint, as long as I can freely express my feelings through each brush stroke and marks I make on canvas. I love painting florals as I feel the flowers have their own personality and energy, and deserve to be ever captured in time. I also like “quirky and kitchy” to explore everyday objects we bring into our space and display as Art. I am also drawn to water and the color blue. You will see this in most if not all of my work, as I create freely, in child like play, making marks, and choosing my colors intuitively while expressing myself. As the saying goes, I wear my heart ( or paint) on my sleeve( and apron) through the practice of my art.
The blank canvas in front of me excites me the most . This is how I capture my experience, whether walking through the woods breathing in the clean air, sitting on a beach at sunrise, or in front of a still life, I am living in that moment. It’s still amazing to me each time, how shapes and forms take place to actually represent what I’m feeling and seeing, the eyes of an artist!
Painting is my purpose and I truly hope to portray my passion in every piece I share with you.
