Emma Kunz House, oil on canvas, 16"h x 20"w, 2020. Emma Kunz House, 16"h x 20"w, oil on canvas, 2020. This painting will be available at the 2020 Belleville Historical Society Plein Air Auction fund raiser, Sept 19, 2020, 1pm. The Emma Kunz House, built in 1851, is the earliest dated Greek Revival house in Belleville and possibly in Illinois. Because of its historical significance, it was saved from demolition by the Belleville Historical Society and is now a museum. The house is also a Cakeway to the West site, a 2014 event that placed painted cake sculptures at points of interest throughout the St. Louis area.

When I visited the Emma Kunz House the August afternoon patterns of sunlight and shadow created an interesting composition that revealed its architectural form and detail. I refreshed the colors of the 250th birthday cake and added the children playing hoops, a Victorian era toy, to enhance the idea of the passage of time and the celebration of Belleville history.
