Edith Wharton wrote in her book Italian Villas and Their Gardens, "The Italian Garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it." The 1904 book, illustrated by Maxfield Parrish, explores the relationship of the house, the formal gardens and surrounding countryside. What interested me in painting this setting was framing the view with the delicate patterns of the outdoor furnishings and arched terrace against the brightness of the table linens and drape, the swash of magenta blooms and the view beyond.
