This painting is inspired by a recent online genealogy hint that my 5th great grandfather was a Cherokee named Yellow Bear Qu Sadui and that his daughter, Yonnah (Eleven Bear), married William Henry Mason in 1786 in Tennessee. Subsequent generations of Mason families moved westward to Missouri and to Oklahoma where I was born. Rosa Mason Anderson, my grandmother, was the daughter of William (Red Bill) Mason.
The hint also included information about an incident in 1804 in which Yellow Bear was wounded and a child shot dead in his arms. He later received a peace offering from President James Madison.
