Born Muriel Elsie Carlson in Duluth, MN January 27, 1916, she was one of nine children raised by Victor and Alma Carlson. She had five brothers and three sisters. Her sister Beatrice is now the only surviving sibling and lives outside Minneapolis, MN. She had 22 nieces and nephews.
She grew up on the family farm located on Chub Lake. During the Depression, her family struggled. She loved her large family and they remained in close contact with one another their entire lives.
She attended Central High School in Duluth and at least two years of college at Minneapolis State Teachers College. She married Robert James Woodruff in 1940. They had three children, Janice Annette (Fauber) deceased 2005, Christine Mary Graham, and Mark McMurray Woodruff and grandmother to Alicia Christine Romano and Michael Ronald Romano.
Muriel and Bob moved to Berkeley, CA in 1948, where they raised their family. In 1951 a family cabin was built on the shore of Clear Lake. Muriel and Bob separated in 1974 and she relocated to Clearlake Oaks. Robert passed away in 1975.
A life long artist in many different mediums, she had many awards and shows and sold many of her numerous works, perhaps more than 600. Active in the Oakland Art Association, Marin Society of Artists, Konocti Art Association and others for years. She was also active with volunteer groups including AWARE and Redbud Hospital Volunteers and helped bring the Share program to Clearlake Oaks.
She was an avid reader, loved traveling and did some writing.
