Spencer was born in Oakland, CA where she studied art at UC Berkeley under Margaret Peterson and received her Masters in Art in 1950. She also studied under Clyfford Still at the California School of Fine Arts. She won many awards in her early career. She worked for her father's architecture firm, Spencer and Associates.
Her father was a friend of Ansel Adams and she did many artworks around Yosemite, including murals, screens and tile work at the Ahwahnww Hotel., Camp Curry and Yosemite Lodge.
Like many female artists of the time she seemed to disappear from the art scene but according to her daughter, she did continue to create art throughout her life.
