Message
Melissa Brauen is an award winning exhibiting artist. Her work is in private collections throughout Mississippi, Louisiana, and beyond.
She was raised in New Orleans, LA and is currently a resident of the MS Gulf Coast.
Melissa has had an artistic obsession since childhood, playing in clay, paint, fabrics and more. She started her professional journey as young teen using pastels to create commissioned portraits. After following other professional pursuits, she returned to her creative roots with dedication to honing her artistic skills.
She studied the arts throughout her life in traditional as well as non-traditional venues such as college courses, virtual training, and live workshops. She now has a steady art practice in her home studio.
Statement
I create abstracted paintings of human forms and landscapes using acrylics and mixed media. My interest is in expressing the essence of human experiences and environments, while also leaving enough room for the viewer’s interpretation.
My esthetic leans toward distressed, time worn finishes using layered, patterned, and textured techniques. I use mono-printing, collage, and other media in creating a blend of atmospheric, organic, and structural elements.
I don’t have a solid idea when I begin, only a vague sense of what I am after. My process is one of ‘call and response’ allowing intuition to guide each move. At some point a concept, shape, or idea surfaces. It’s then that I start to work towards a focused goal.
What I love most in the process of letting go and experimenting are the surprises that come along with that. It's like an excavation; what will I discover today? This is what continues to inspire and motivate me to create.

- I work primarily in acrylic mediums, while also using collage, pastel, ink and other art mediums.
- I use professional materials and mediums to ensure archival quality.
- All work is sealed and varnished with a non-yellowing, archival, UV resistant, polymer, water based varnish.
- 300 GSM paper is used for works on paper which are matted for presentation as well as framing. I also mount some of these on primed cradled panel
- Gallery wrapped canvas and medium to large cradled panels are wired and ready to hang. Small panels have a sawtooth hanger and bumper guards.
