Melanie Cambridge
London
Melanie's paintings are a celebration the English landscape. Shimmering with light and movement, they capture the essential atmosphere of each place she visits
MessageMelanie paints as a response to the moods and atmospheres of the landscape, where she aims to convey the fleeting impressions of her surroundings. Her paintings are an interplay of colour and harmonies with the specifics of each subject playing a supporting role. The beaches of West Wittering and the open skies over the North Downs are recurring themes in her work.
Melanie uses traditional oil paint and texture mediums to build up layers of colour to create her personal interpretations of the unique and transient light effects in the sky and landscape.
Melanie Cambridge has been painting full time for over 30 years and still gets a “buzz” when outside in changing light. The challenge of trying to capture the essence of the scene in front of her, be that with initial sketches or quick oil studies has always provided the starting point for her work.
Statement
My work is a celebration of the land and coast around us. I am a painter of light, space and weather. Being in nature and painting en plein air is key to my practice. Smaller studies produced on location then form the inspiration for larger studio work. Underpinning my work is the desire to capture the essence of a place then re-create it in paint.
I love oil paint. It’s a medium that stays put and can capture a light effect straight away when on location. For studio work, my approach is to block in a whole canvas using loose lively brushstrokes, before refining it with further layers, glazes and texture.
By creating art, I hope to show you my vision of the world and share it with you.
